Londres, 13 de Diciembre de 2012, un frío congelante, llegue al aeropuerto de Heathrow Londres, al mediodía, después de 17 horas de trabajo y lo poquito que podía haber descansado, no pegue ojo ni una hora, ni un minuto, ni un segundo.

London, 13th December, lunchtime. After 17 hours of solid work and very little rest, I landed into London Heathrow in the bitter cold. Truth be said, I didn’t get a hour, a minute or a second´s sleep.
En Heathrow Express, no sabía lo que me esperaba…
Estaba ilusionada con ver en directo al cantante- compositor de canciones que sonaron es España como Feel, Tripping o Angel; también había visto el videoclip en el que se despojaba de su cuerpo humano (Canción Rock Dj).
Conocía su música: pero no lo que el artista transmitía.
Era la presentación privada de Robbie Williams con Radio 2 por Universal UK, un concierto solo para 150 personas, Dios mío…. yo era una de ellas!!

I was excited to see the live, the singer, song-writer of songs that I’d heard in Spain, such as ¨Feel¨, ¨Tripping¨or “Angel¨as well as the videoclip where he goes from dancing in his underwear to dancing as a skeleton (song «Rock DJ»).
His music wasn’t new to me: but what it transmitted was.
Universal UK was organising a private concert for only 150 people with Radio 2, and……guess what, I was one of them!!!

Ahora puedo confesarlo, desde el post de Universal del pasado mes de noviembre, sabía que podía asistir a este concierto tan especial, pero no os lo desvelé, en caso de que las cosas se complicaran, para no decepcionar…….pero ocurrió!!

Now I must confess that I knew I would be attending this special event, ever since it was announced by Universal to me last November. However, I deliberately chose not to share that with you so as not to disappoint you, should things not work out……….but they did! 🙂

Sobre las 16h, ya me encontraba en los edificios de la BBC, y pese a ser un concierto tan reducido, ya había cola delante la puerta. Mis amigos de Universal me trasladaron al edificio secundario Western House, para esperar la hora del concierto.

Around 4pm, I was at the BBC and despite the fact that it was a very exclusive concert, people were queuing outside. My friends from Universal took me to Western House´s building until it was time for the concert.

No os hacéis ni una idea de la seguridad y control de los movimientos que lleva una persona como Robbie, desde L.A, esta su co-manager, Josie, que sigue segundo a segundo sus movimientos, constantemente conectado al equipo y a su escolta: «Robbie acaba de llegar al edificio por la puerta lateral, a Robbie le recoge coche tal persona, despejar el rellano en el minuto 22′, la persona tal va a abrir la puerta, Robbie tiene 12 pasos hasta llegar al ascensor, en recepción solo hay dos personas, está subiendo por el ascensor de la izquierda hasta la planta 3, Robbie sale del ascensor, Robbie….» y así, cada día.
Para aprovechar el tiempo, me puse a trabajar un poquito y sentada en el sofá con mi maleta de recién llegada abierta en el suelo, portátil en las piernas, teléfono en las manos, y papeles de notas en la boca sujetándolos porque no encontraba el bolígrafo, fue en ese preciso momento, cuando escucho la voz de Steve de Universal, que me dice: «Paty te vienen a recoger en 20 minutos», levanté la mirada y ahí estaba, ROBBIE WILLIAMS, con más de 66 MILLONES de álbumes vendidos, mirándome, rodeado de 6 personas entre seguridad, manager y personal, dirigiéndose hacia la puerta de mi izquierda a 10 cm…..y yo con esa guisa! Ya había sucedido, no podía rebobinar….!

You have no idea of the security put in place for someone like Robbie. His co-manager, Josie, from L.A, is in touch with his team and bodyguard to monitor his whereabouts: “Robbie has just entered the building through the side door, Robbie is being picked up by such-and-such, Robbie is 12 steps away from the lift, there are only 2 people in reception, he´s going up in the left lift to the third floor, Robbie is exiting the lift, Robbie…..” day in, day out.
While I was waiting, I opened my suitcase, sat down on the sofa, took out my laptop and started to work: mobile in one hand, notepad in my mouth because I couldn´t find my pen….and at that very moment, I heard Steve, from Universal, saying: ¨Paty, you´re being picked up in 20 minutes”. I looked up and saw ROBBIE WILLIAMS , the artist who has sold 66 million albums, and 6 people more (security, manager and staff) looking down at me as he headed towards the door… Talk about catching me unawares! But hey, it happened and I couldn´t do anything about it….!
Donde monté mi oficina particular, segundos más tarde la primera vez que vi a Robbie…
Me vinieron a buscar y pasamos al edifico principal, al teatro de la BBC y con mi acreditación para moverme entre bambalinas!! No había público todavía, la gente esperaba fuera, aún quedaban por lo menos dos horas. Por allí, solo había el equipo técnico y algunos miembros de Universal que ya me eran familiares, como la encantadora Charley Byrnes una de las directoras de Radio Promotion en Universal, o Darcus Beese, presidente de Island Records en Universal, y mi amigo Steve Pitron.

I was picked up and we headed to the main building, the BBC Theatre where I was given my backstage accreditation!! Everyone was still queuing outside, since the concert wasn´t due to start for another 2 hours. Inside were the technical team and some familiar faces from Universal, such as the delightful Charley Byrnes, from Radio Promotion at Universal or Darcus Beese, President of Island Records at Universal, and my lovely Steve Pitron.

Todos corrían de un pasillo para otro ultimando detalles, trabajaban a 1.000 por hora.En uno de los departamentos, una chica llegó con un portátil, con las fotografías de Robbie tomadas en la entrevista que le habían hecho un ratito atrás, y seleccionaban Steve y Charley, cuando apareció a revisar un señor de rigurosa seriedad, alto, imponente, se me presentó, sonrió (creo que reconoció que era la que había montado una oficina en el sofá de la BBC) y era nada más y nada menos que David Enthoven, manager de Robbie Williams!! El maestro, un ejemplo a seguir, si pudiera pedir un deseo de entre todos los deseos del mundo, sería pasar 48h viendo como trabaja David.

The energy was magical and everyone was running frantically around getting ready for the show. In one of the departments, a girl arrived with a laptop and asked Steva and Charley to choose from a selection of photos that had been taken in an interview Robbie´d just given. Just then a tall, imposing and serious looking gentleman arrived, smiled ( I think he recognised me as being the girl put an office on the sofa at Western House ) and introduced himseld as David Enthoven, Robbie William´s manager!!!! A genius and a role-model: it would be a dream come true to spend 2 days watching him at work.

Segundos más tarde, sucedió lo que jamás creía que pudiera suceder, se abrió esa puerta en la que nadie mas entró durante la estancia del cantante, donde había podido observar que solo accedían David y Steve, y escuché «Paty come», entre al camerino de Robbie, pequeño, modesto, pero acogedor, provisto solo de fruta, agua y Sprite (fui la ÚNICA afortunada en este día), con un «hola!!!» arrolladoramente enérgico en español, una sonrisa espectacular, y esos grandes ojos azules, como ojeras de oso panda que observan cada detalle: damas y caballeros……..MR. ROBBIE WILLIAMS!
Había ensayado unas palabras por si se daba la ocasión, me prometí ser fuerte y….estuve…pero… no estuve, sin nada que decir. Su personalidad, su revolución de genialidad, y lo afortunada que me sentía…. mi Paty extrovertida me abandonó.
Me colapsó con preguntas como ¿Española eh? ¿Has venido solo para mi concierto? ¿Cuando llegaste a Londres? ¿Ibiza fantástica?! y casi no tenía mis respuestas, me quede inmóvil, sin articular apenas palabra, mirando fijamente al mayor Rey y leyenda viva del Pop, en mi opinión, para el resto de los tiempos. Quién demonios va a poder quitarle la corona? Nadie.
Saliendo, lo supe, las cosas buenas pasan solo una vez.

Seconds later, something I never believed would happen……happened. The door which no-one else had crossed the whole time the singer was there, except David and Steve, opened and I heard ¨Paty, come in¨. I went into his small, modest but cozy dressing room with nothing else but fruit, water and sprite (I was the only one fortunate enough to get into the dressing room that day) . With an amazingly powerful he said ¨Hola!!¨ in Spanish, coupled with a spectacular smile and the big blue eyes of an observant panda bear: Ladies and gentlemen…..MR. ROBBIE WILLIAMS!
I´d briefly rehearsed a few words in case the occasion arose, and I vowed to be strong……and yet I was speechless. Just seeing him, his personality, his revolution of genious and thinking how fortunate I was……what ever happened to the extrovert I´d always been.
He reeled off a series of questions: So ¿you´re Spanish?, ¿you´ve come just to see my concert?, ¿When did you get to London?, Isn´t Ibiza great?! I stood there still, almost unable to utter a single word, staring at the king and living legend of Pop, the greatest of all times. Who hell could ever beat him the crown? Nobody.
As I left, I thought that all good things only happen once.
Llegó la hora, y después de ser introducido por la presentadora Jo Whiley , allí salió perfecto en el escenario, imperfecto en la vida, con su novia la pandereta y su banda, Karl Brazil (batería), Gary Nuttall (guitarrista y el componente mas antiguo de la banda), Tom Longworth (guitarrista), Jerry Meehan (bajo), Denosh Benett (corista) y SaraJane Skeete (corista).
No habían pasado ni unos segundos, que ese tipo con el que había estado antes, con una mezcla de voz U2, movimientos ocasionales de Charles Chaplin y gesticulaciones faciales a lo Jack Nicholson… rocked my world! En el escenario, es él mismo, pero magnificado, un absoluto genio.
Robbie Williams, con 13 álbumes en el mercado (Desde el año 1997 hasta el año 2012), ha ganado un número considerable de premios a lo largo de su carrera, incluyendo:
- 45 premios Grammy
- Más Brit Awards que ningún otro artista en la historia de la música, un récord de 17.
- Más ECHO Awards, que ningún otro artista nunca, un récord de 10.
Mi perspectiva de vida, de música , de ser… Ignoraba que desde ese momento, no iba a ser la misma, me iba a sentir ridículamente feliz, iba a disfrutar poniendo mi corazón a 160 pulsaciones por minuto a golpe de su garganta. Las señales de prohibido, Robbie las cambió por «pase sin llamar»!
No podía empezar de otra manera que alborotando al público con su: LET ME ENTERTAIN YOU!

The time came for him to be introduced by Jo Whiley, what may be imperfect in real life walked into the stage as, with his girlfriend the tambourine and his band, Karl Brazil (drums), Gary Nuttall (guitar and the oldest member of the group), Tom Longworth (guitar), Jerry Meehan (bass), Denosh Benett and Sara Jane Skeete as vocalists.
Here he was rocking my work, the guy I´d been with minutes before, with a voice reminiscent of U2, occasional moves like Charlie Chaplin and making faces like Jack Nicholson. He´s just himself on stage, but completely magnified, an absolute genius.
Robbie Williams, with 13 albums on the market (From 1997 to 2012), has won several awards throughout his successful solo career, including:

Más de 20 años en el escenario, una carrera empezada con el grupo Take That, y luego en solitario basada en los excesos y descontroles, destructor de si mismo en su juventud…. y aun así, es el artista y persona más COMPLETO. Olé su manera de existir.
Probablemente influenciado por Frank Sinatra, Freddy Mercury o Elvis Presley, él en la versión mejorada: cantante, compositor, actor, cómico, todo tipo de estilo de baile incluido de claqué, deportista, medio toca la guitarra ;)… lo mismo canta jazz, que rap, que pop, que rock and roll 😉

His style is an improved version of the geniuses who probably influenced him for Frank Sinatra, Freddy Mercury or Elvis Presley: singer, composer, actor, comedian, dancer of all types including tap, sportsman, who can even play the guitar 😉 ……. sing rap, jazz, pop and rock&roll. 😉

Curiosamente no es lo habitual hablar de la voz de Robbie, sin embargo, creo que es lo mejor de él, una voz rockera-popera, perfecta en afinación, sin ni un signo de cansancio en el aliento, y que te engancha canción tras canción.
Destacar, I-N-I-G-U-A-L-A-B-L-E la generosidad y complicidad con el público mientras cantaba, se dejaba abrazar, dedicaba cariños, bromas, autógrafos, besos y un sueño, para una chica llamada Elisabeth, le dedico «She´s The One», mientras transcurría el show. En todos los conciertos que he ido en mi vida (que he ido a muchísimos) NUNCA antes vi a un cantante tan GENEROSO. Jamás! GRACIAS!
Mi querida locura, empezaba hablar otro idioma! …..mmmmmmmmm….yesssss please!!
Transcurrió esa hora y poco más de concierto, con las canciones: Lazy Days, Candy, Rock DJ, She´s The One, Be a Boy, Feel, What Christmas (Canción de Navidad que hasta a eso, le da su toque by Robbie y lo baila como la canción más marchosa de pop ;)), Not Like The Others, Kids, Different, Angels y Losers, junto con su corista Denosh Benett.
Os dejo el último video en directo de Robbie, publicado el 29 de Enero, interpretando BE A BOY, canción que pertenece a este nuevo álbum,»Take the Crown», el qué todos sus admiradores estábamos esperando, el más grande, confiado, personal, el auténtico estallido de este artista, que quiere demostrar quién está en lo más alto, cómo nos deja entrever en el propio título, Robbie Williams vuelve a pelear por la «corona».

Ironically his voice is what is least talked about, yet I think it´s his best asset: a rock-pop voice, that never shows a sign of tiredness, keeps you hanging onto to every word of every song.
His generosity and complicity with the audience was U-N-P-R-E-C-E-D-E-N-T-E-D: hugs, words of affection, jokes, autographs, kisses and a dream come true for a girl called Elisabeth, to whom he dedicted the song “She´s the one¨.
In all the concerts I´ve been to (and I´ve been to quite a few), I´ve NEVER EVER seen such a GENEROUS singer. THANK YOU!
The language in which my madness is usually expressed was changing…..mmmmmm……..yesssss please!!
In just over an hour, he sang Lazy Days, Candy, Rock DJ, She´s the One, Be a Boy, White Christmas (his own personal pop rendering of the traditional Christmas Carol ;)), Not like the Others, Kids, Different, Angels and Losers with the vocalist Denosh Benett.

I´m not sure which word I´d use to describe his unique voice and stage presence: it would be a combination of artist, unadulterated, fun-loving, charisma, improvisor, arrogant, generous, provocative, flirt, energetic, daring, cheeky, euphoric, agile, challenging, moving, paranoic, contradictory, affectionate, seductive, extravagant, sensitive, self-esteem… all that is : ROBBIE WILLIAMS!

Al día siguiente regresé a España, y se ha convertido en una «droga buena» ver conciertos del REY DEL POP. Verlos es como hacer el amor hasta que te cuesta respirar, máxima adrenalina….moriré con este veneno!!

Podéis ver decenas de ellos y ninguno será repetido, la improvisación va en su metabolismo, invita a amigos a participar, presenta a su madre, juega a fútbol, cuenta chistes, habla por teléfono con teléfonos de los asistentes, liga con el público, cambia las versiones…… cada concierto, un mundo nuevo 🙂

The following day, I came back to Spain and haven´t stopped watching the King of Pop´s concerts since then it’s been like a good drug to me. I´d compare it to making love when you can hardly breathe, a rush of adrenaline……my blood is poisoned for the rest of my life! My blood is poisoned!

No matter how many videos you watch, none will ever be identical: improvisation is part of his DNA:he asks his friends to join in, he brings his mother on stage, he plays football, he tells jokes, he uses his assistants´phones to make calls, he flirts with his audience, he changes versions of songs…every concert is a different World 🙂
